Philadelphia. It’s known as the city of Brotherly Love. Now, I may not have a brother, but my old college roomie Dave is the next best thing.

Dave and I met in college when we both shared our mutual love for comic books and the classic ’60s spy show The Prisoner. (It’s pretty rare to find anyone who’s even heard of Patrick McGoohan’s classic TV series, so meeting a comic fan in my dorm who loved the show as much as I did made for an easy friendship.)

Every few years, I try to get together with Dave and my very first college roommate Keith. Philadelphia seems to be the best middle ground, so we usually meet there for a weekend. Recently, I met up with Dave (Keith sadly couldn’t make it.) for a Philly reunion!

Overall it was a fun, relaxing weekend and I’ve got plenty of great Philly tales to tell. But for this post, I wanted to concentrate on the hotel we stayed at.

The Sonesta Philadelphia Downtown (located at 1800 Market Street in Philadelphia, PA), was so perfectly located! If downtown Philadelphia were a big rectangle (which it is), the Sonesta is pretty much smack dab in the center of it all. Easy to walk to just about anything and everything in downtown Philadelphia.

But location isn’t all. The hotel itself was fabulous! Let’s start with the coolest door keys around.

#Sonesta

Yes I’ve used key cards before at hotels. And yes, many times they never work and I’m stuck shoving the key in and out four or five times before the red light turns green and they finally open. These doors are different.

You merely wave your card by the circle above the handle and… BOOM! Like magic, you hear a click and can open the door! It’s like stepping into the future.

The room itself was real spacious. We had two large beds, a nice sized sofa and a desk. That’s half of Dave right there. Clearly I’m building up suspense!

I loved this super long sofa by the window. It was unfortunately crazy rainy that day because the view of the city is pretty spectacular.

The bathroom was real nice too, with plenty of counter space for all my shaving gear, as well as Dave’s. I loved the huge lighted mirror!

The shower was also fabulous. I don’t take long showers usually, unless there’s really bad water pressure. That wasn’t a problem at all here since the shower heads at the Sonesta rocked big time. I’m also a big fan of the dispensers for soap, shampoo and conditioner. Whatever can make showering faster and easier gets a big thumbs up from me!

Every time I go to a hotel, whether for business or pleasure, I always bring gym clothes with me. Just in case. And 99% of the time, I never use them. I’m happy to report that this time, I did! The Sonesta Philadelphia has a real nice gym, located on the same floor as the outdoor pool.

There’s a real nice assortment of treadmills, bikes and ellipticals to get your cardio going. Dave jumped on the elliptical for a bit while I hit the weights.

Man, building up these 24-inch pythons isn’t as easy as it looks!

Dave quickly reached his weight limit on the super customizable Star Trac machine.

Downstairs on the first floor of the hotel is a great place to hang out at the Art Bar, a neat restaurant/bar that’s open real late! Lots of comfy seats too.

The above is just a small snapshot of the large seating area. Great place to grab a drink, share an appetizer or sit with your laptop as you people watch the city of Philadelphia.

Besides a reception area, the lobby of the hotel also has its own neat little art gallery! The hotel apparently works with The Center for Emerging Visual Artists to display works by local artists on a six-month rotation.

Okay, so I’m not the biggest art critic in the world, but I still find it really cool that local artists can show off (and hopefully sell!) their masterpieces in a cool hotel like the Sonesta Philadelphia.

Dave and I totally enjoyed our stay at the Sonesta Philadelphia Downtown and I’d most certainly stay there again. Fantastic location, loads of luxury and an incredibly helpful and friendly staff all combined for one amazing weekend.

  1. I love this! I live about 45 minutes away from Philly and would like a place my husband and I could take a mini vacay away from the kids, but not be too far from them.

  2. Looks fun with lots of things to do. It is amazing what all are in some motels now. I like that there is a weight exercise room. The room itself is beautiful!
