Grooming 101: My Kids Think I Stink

#GuysGroomToo GroomingAccording to my kids, I stink.

No, I didn’t send them to bed without any supper. Didn’t take away their Nintendo privileges. And certainly didn’t make them go outside and get some fresh air.

Uh uh. My kids say I stink and they mean it literally. We’re talking grooming issues here, people.

Apparently I sweat. A lot. And with this insane heat wave combined with more humidity than should be legal on this planet, it’s been a pretty uncomfortable summer for me to say the least. Even just walking to the end of the driveway to get the mail results in a bucket of sweat pouring out of my body.

Sorry for the visual but I have the feeling I’m not alone. I’m married some 18 years now. Have two kids, one a teenager already. And to say personal grooming habits are low on my priority list is an understatement.

Don’t get me wrong. I shower. I even use soap! I’ll generally just mush up my hair afterwards and if I remember, I’ll grab a comb or brush. I use deodorant every day, though it’s the gel stick that feels kind of icky and almost invariably leaves a stain on my T-shirts.

It’s just that when it’s extra hot and humid out or I’m exerting myself a lot, that’s when my kids might notice I don’t exactly smell like I just walked out of the shower.

Good thing there are companies like Unilever that put out grooming products for guys like me. I figure it’s probably time I cleaned up my act a bit so my kids can actually hug me and my wife won’t be embarrassed to be seen (or smelled) with me in public.

So I have officially stepped up my game! For starters, forget that ever-shrinking bar of soap. I gave Dove Men+Care Extra Fresh Body and Face Wash a try and… ooooooooh.

Is this why women have 19 different bottles of soaps and shampoos in the shower at all times? It not only smells great, but it lathers on beautifully and seems to moisturize too. I have pretty dry skin that’s always itchy and peeling, so I’m a huge fan of this one!

And for those keeping score at home, yes, this means I’m even using one of those poofy loofah-type sponge thingies. I tell you, showering is like a whole new world to me now!

As a kid, I never was one to use gel, so the whole spiky hair look was never for me. Apparently, gel does more than make pointy hair. With this AXE Clean Cut Look Classic Pomade , I can actually make my bird’s nest of hair look good. And it won’t take me hours either.

Just a little bit on my fingertips, mixed into my hair and then I just comb to style and I’m done. It’s not super sticky icky on my fingers either, which is what I used to always hate about any type of gel or cream.

And finally, there’s the Degree Men Adventure Dry Spray Antiperspirant and Deodorant. Like I said, I’ve been using deodorant sticks for as long as I can remember. And while the gel-type are a bit “softer” than the powdery white kind, they still leave a residue on my clothes and a bit of a sticky feeling on my armpits.

I was a bit skeptical about using a spray on but man how insanely cool does this look? I feel like it’s fresh out of Star Wars or something with that twistable top. It turns to lock the spray so you don’t accidentally squirt it all over the place when you don’t need to.

Easy to use and a really pleasant, not overpowering smell is what I found from Degree. It also claims that it’s a “Dry Spray.” I had no idea what that meant until I used it. And, well, they’re right. You spray it on and the second it hits your skin, it’s dry. There’s no wet or sticky feeling at all. I think I’m sold!

I have to say it really doesn’t take much to step up my grooming game if I have the right products. Who knew?

  1. My teenage son and I just got into a debate this morning whether body spray is actually deodorant. He seems to think it is and I disagreed. Well, I won and told him he needs to use stick deodorant and then a body spray. No stinky boys in this house!
