My childhood can be summed up in 11 La’s. As in, “La, la, la, la la la, la, la, la, la, laaaa.” Otherwise known as The Smurfs theme.
Yes, I remember spending soooo many Saturday mornings on the couch with my sister Beth as we watched Papa Smurf lead his merry band of Smurfs (and one Smurfette!) on all sorts of adventures. My favorite Smurf was clearly Handy Smurf. That guy was the McGuyver of Smurfs!
And my favorite Smurf episode? I don’t even recall the name but it was basically a “Walking Dead” episode where one Smurf turned all purple, got super angry and ran around screaming, “GNAP!”, while biting every other Smurf on the tail. If bit, a Smurf would turn purple and continue the trend!
There were so many other great cartoons I recall from childhood like Inspector Gadget! Scooby Doo! Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (my all-time favorite!) And even live-action shows like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse!
Clearly the folks at Netflix share in my nostalgia, since you can now find all sorts of classic cartoons (like those mentioned in the previous paragraph!) over at Netflix.com/heirloom! They even have… gasp… Danger Mouse!!!! I watched that one when I was a bit older but totally loved this James Bond-type adventure starring Danger Mouse and his faithful sidekick Penfold.
As part of the Netflix Stream Team, I was sent one of the coolest nostalgia gifts ever! What was in it? A trio of Inspector Gadget T-shirts for me and the boys to wear. A Danger Mouse keychain! And all the materials necessary to build your own blanket tent!
Yes, nostalgia is in! (That’s kind of the point of nostalgia, isn’t it?) And according to a recent report from Netflix, dads are all over this classic cartoon craze! Some 86% of US dads plan to pass cartoons from their childhood on to their kids!
I used to build couch cushion forts all the time! I loved it as a kid and loved making them when my boys were little. We even made all sorts of tent forts too using chairs and blankets. Of course, they lasted all of 30 seconds, since my boys would pretty much jump all over them.
Last weekend I was up visiting my family for dad’s birthday. My sister Beth came over too, so I figured what better source of entertainment then to build a fort for my kids and her daughter Shay!

The finished project! Okay, so I wouldn’t spend a night under the stars in this thing, but I’d certainly watch some classic cartoons like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

What, you thought I was only going to let the kids have all the fun? No way! Beth and I had to relive our youth a bit and hide out in the blanket fort while watching some classics on Netflix. Too bad we couldn’t find any Cap’n Crunch cereal while we were in there…

My favorite cartoons from years ago were: yogi Bear and Boo Boo; Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd; Bugs Bunny and the Roadrunner; the Smurfs and Donald Duck.
I would love watching them again. I forgot to mention Fred Flintstone and Barney. Oh, those were the good old days.
My husband and I have been trying to decide if we should get Netflix or not.

I wish I could use Netflix, I live in a rural area where internet is wireless, so very expensive and not unlimited. I watched 2 SD movies and got an email saying I was almost at my limit so just not practical here.

I used to love Scooby Doo, Speed Buggy, super friends and the Flinstones.
We would visit our Grandparents often and my Grandma always made sure to have a VHS tape – yes, I aged myself – filled with cartoons, especially Garfield!
I think the older cartoons from the 50’s and 60’s are much better than the ones of today.
