2016 is the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series and one of the ways Nintendo celebrated this event was by releasing new main series of Pokemon games: Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.  In this review I will be taking a look at Pokemon Sun.

Pokemon Sun

The gameplay in Pokemon Sun is mostly like the other Pokemon games.  Here is a very simple explanation for those who have not played a Pokemon game before: in battle you can pick 1 of 4 moves to attack the opponent with and a Pokemon is defeated when its HP reaches 0.

The battle screen is improved from the last game.  On the bottom screen in the middle are the Pokemon that are in battle now. Tapping on them shows what stats have been raised or lowered and your Pokemon’s held item and ability.

Pokemon Sun

This game completely gets rid of gyms in favor of trials.  Each trial is conducted by a trail captain who specializes in one type of Pokemon.  The trials could be anything as the first one is to defeat two Yungoos and one Gumshoes.  At the end of each trial you have to face a Totem Pokemon.  A Totem Pokemon has increased stats and are larger.  I have only finished one trial so far and it was really easy but it is only the first one so they could get harder.

Pokemon Sun

In this game, HM’s are removed and replaced with PokeRide.  While HM’s have to be taught to a Pokemon and waste a valuable move slot, PokeRides can be called on at any time and fill the role that HM’s had in past games.  This is one of the greatest changes in this game, as now my Pokemon can have more options to destroy other Pokemon.

Pokemon Sun

In Pokemon Sun, many new Pokemon, moves and abilities are introduced.  So far each and every one is unique.  This game does a great job celebrating Pokemon’s 20th anniversary and is a great game in general.

I give it 5/5 Stars

  1. I have to admit I have never ever played Pokeman. I know, it is a shame, but I never have played it. It looks fairly easy, and I like the cute characters. I know a nephew plays it, maybe the next time he comes over, I will have to try his games!
