Super Mario 3D Land

When K’NEX came out with a line of building toys based on Nintendo’s Mario Kart video game series, I honestly think I was more excited than my kids. And trust me, they were crazy excited.

Building the sets is fun, sure, but the real fun is in the play ability. And with motorized Mario Karts that can race around a track you build yourself, well, that’s just beyond cool. I wasn’t sure if K’NEX could push things any further but they certainly proved me wrong with their latest line.

As a K’NEX Ambassador (Yes, I must bring that up every opportunity I can. Great ice breaker at parties!), I get assortments of products sent to me for review. The latest batch had a slew of things I can’t wait to dive into including some toys based on Angry Birds, Super Mario, and the all-new Pac-Man cartoon!

Once I wiped the drool off of Jason’s mouth and wrestled the Super Mario: Prongo Building Set away from his vice-like grip, I grabbed my camera and we got to work!

Like most K’NEX building sets, you go step by step with the directions to snap the pieces together. Some are easy, some harder. My kids have trouble with some of the smaller pieces actually, which can be a bit tricky to get together. I also have to say that K’NEX could do a better job with their instructions. They’re not awful by any means, but there are a number of spots where you can’t exactly tell where a piece is supposed to hook into.

That doesn’t mean Jason and I weren’t able to figure things out and build this Super Mario 3D playset. It didn’t actually take that long to put together and the fun factor really kicks in when everything’s connected.

Super Mario K'NEX

Notice this one comes with Raccoon Mario (a.k.a. Tanooki) as he bounces around trying to collect coins and battle the evil blue armless guy called Prongo. I never played Super Mario 3D Land so I have no clue who this guy is. But Jason and Ryan both knew him instantly.

Things start off with Mario sliding down the familiar green pipe as he enters the next level looking for Prongo! Notice the spiffy red “M” flag that you’ll eventually catch up to.

Mario Coin

One of the cooler things of this set is that you can replace Mario’s regular legs with this “bouncy” leg. It’s a plastic circle with a marble weight at the bottom and Mario’s legs attached on top. This way you can put him on all these little brown jumper spaces, pull the tab back and watch him “jump” to the next level.

Mario Star

Oooh, a super secret room with a Star! Grab the star and bounce up through that trap door in the ceiling to knock baddie Prongo on his big blue butt!

If you don’t go through the trap door, Mario can just take Prongo on by himself. That racoon tail must give him loads of courage!

The final step to victory is landing on the platform that pops up the red “M” flag (with black Bowser flag on the other side). Sorry for the blurry photo but I was fighting off Goombas with one hand while shooting this one.

There’s certainly a lot of play potential with this set and I can already picture Ryan grabbing all of his “guys” and jumping all over the place on this set. He already asked me to pick up all the other Super Mario K’NEX sets so we can build lots of levels.

I am entering this contest for my 5 1/2 year old. He is obsessed with Super Mario Bros. His all time favorite character is, he has 3 he said he can’t pick just 1. Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach. His bedroom is Super Mario Theme with all the accessories. His B day is 9/28 and asked for this building set for his B day. Before this set came out, I built him a play land so he could play with his characters in it. Please, please pick Jantzen for this giveaway. I know he would appreciate it more than you know.

I’ve always been a fan of Toadstool :) but… when I play Mario Kart or Mario Party, I’m always Princess Peach or Daisy 😀

I’ll say Luigi because I like the name ( I can almost already *hear* the eye-rolling from my gamer daughter if she should catch wind of my saying that. I’m such a noob :) )

  7. Steph says
