You can’t put a price on your health. That’s what they say anyways. And while the that phrase was originally pointing out that health is the most important thing, it now has a different meaning. You can’t put a price on health, because figuring out all your health care costs is impossible these days!
Seriously, I’ve been on tons of different health plans over the years and I still get easily confused.
In fact, if you think it’s easy to understand all the various costs, go ahead and try to explain health care plans to someone from the UK! I work with a number of people from England and since they have universal health care over there, the whole idea of employer-provided healthcare (or personal healthcare) is pretty alien to them.
The monthly premium is the easy one. But then there’s copays. And co-insurance. And in-network versus out-of-network. And deductibles. And primary versus specialist. Out-of-pocket. The list goes on and on, and you’ll soon realize the more you try to wrap your head around it all, the more painful your headache becomes!
I wonder if that’s the point. Make health care plans so confusing that it gives you headaches and makes you call your doctor! Okay, so maybe that’s a bit of a stretch.
I do know that even just going in-network versus out-of-network can save you tens of thousands of dollars! When Jason was little he ended up needing an emergency appendectomy at around 3 am. He had been complaining lightly of stomach pains earlier in the day. By the evening he was vomiting, so we took him to an urgent care nearby thinking he just needed some fluids or antibiotics. They suspected appendicitis and whisked us to a hospital. We made sure it was in-network, though! That helped tremendously or it easily would’ve end up costing us more than $30,000! (And yes, he’s all good now, thanks for asking.)
