I’m writing this as Hurricane Sandy is currently clobbering the East Coast. Here in NY it’s just getting pretty windy out and the rain just started coming down. The brunt of Frankenstorm should be hitting us later tonight.
Apparently this storm is unprecedented for our area. All the schools in our area were closed today and most likely tomorrow as well. My work didn’t open either. Everyone is preparing for the worst. And that’s exactly what they should be doiong.
Emergency Preparedness is something every family (and all you individuals too) should give serious thought to. You don’t need to build yourself a bomb shelter or panic room, but you should get yourself an emergency kit or at the very least stock up before a big storm hits. Plenty of bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, full gas tank in the car, etc.
And above all else, please don’t be stupid. If there’s a State of Emergency called, don’t head out to Home Depot to pick up some 2 x 4s. You’re only endangering yourself and the rescue workers who will invariably have to go save your dumb behind.
One very neat emergency supply I never knew existed until recently is Zippo’s Emergency Fire Starter Kit. Yes, the same Zippo that’s famous for the gazillions of cool lighters they put out. They were kind enough to send me a sample to test out and I have to say it was pretty damn neat!
This kit is perfect for creating fires when you have no matches or everything’s wet. When you just don’t have any matches or lighters available this kit can literally save your life. It’s shaped just like a regular lighter, but comes in bright orange so it’s easy to spot. The waterproof case houses a number of water-resistant waxed tinder sticks and a flint wheel. No butane in this puppy.
It’s literally like keeping a tiny little Boy Scout in your pocket. You open the case, flick the flint wheel and sparks start to fly. The waxed tinder sticks can unravel a bit to spread out. Just hold it by the flint as you spark it and after a few tries, the stick will catch fire.

Pretty straightforward, this Zippo Fire Starter Kit is definitely going into my Emergency Kit. You can purchase additional waxed tinder sticks too. Definitely a good addition to your camping gear as well.
You can purchase the Emergency Fire Starter Kit straight from Zippo’s website for just $9.95, with additional Tinder Stick packs available for $4.95. Of course, there are oodles of customized waterproof cases you can purchase, including a Pittsburgh Steelers one.
