One Small Change Later I’m Back to Exercising

I’m participating in a fantastic challenge from Puritan’s Pride. It’s all about making one small change in your life to lead towards a healthier lifestyle. I recently shared with you how I’ve pledged to start exercising again, and I wanted to jump in and give you guys an update.

By keeping you in the loop about my One Small Change, I’m not only hoping to motivate and inspire you to make your own pledge, but in a way, it’s also keeping me honest. It’s one thing to start a diet or exercise and get by for a few days, but without a personal trainer or partner helping and coaching you on, it’s real easy to just give up after a short while. So now that I’ve shared my pledge to walk and exercise more with you guys, I’m hoping you can keep me inspired. Keep me motivated. Keep me from slipping back into laziness and ultimately an unhealthy lifestyle.

So it’s been a few weeks and how am I doing? To be completely honest, not as good as I want to be. I’ve slipped a bit in the eating department, thanks to a number of parties and even a Bart Mitzvah this past weekend. I haven’t gone crazy overboard, but I should’ve tried eating a bit healthier.

In terms of exercise, though, I’m certainly getting back into things a bit. Immediately after my first post, I began using my lunch hour at work to do some walking. I work in midtown Manhattan, so there’s really no excuse for not walking. Unless, of course, it’s raining out or Godzilla’s attacking. Luckily neither has really happened of late.

So a few times a week I’ve headed out of my building around 1 or 2 p.m. and just started walking in one direction away from the busier streets. I keep walking until I hit a red light, and then I turn. And continue. I end up taking about a 30 to 35 minute walk I’d say, stopping near the end for an ice coffee most times.

I even downloaded a few running apps to help time and track my progress, which is neat because some include a map to show you exactly where you walked. For some reason, again, that helps keep me motivated, especially when I share that with my friends and family on Facebook.

The biggest and easily toughest thing, though, is getting up early during the week to go dow in the basement to walk on the treadmill. I’m so not a morning person and even getting up at 6:15 a.m. every day for work is brutal for me. So setting the alarm for 5:30 a.m. to exercise is just… well, it should be illegal if you ask me.

But I’ve done it.  A few times so far. My goal is to get up to speed where I do it three times a week and use the other days to either rest or walk during my lunch break.

I haven’t really noticed much yet in terms of losing weight and I’m not even going on the scale yet. I want to just get into exercising and how I look, not what some numbers tell me. Allie said my face looks a bit thinner already, so I’m guessing it’s working a bit. As long as I can get myself to bed a bit earlier than the usual (That Night Owl is real tough to get to bed!), I can handle getting up at 5:30. Of course by 3 p.m. I’m ready to go to bed!

Have you pledged to make One Small Change in your life yet? If not, do it now! And be sure to share it on the Puritan’s Pride Facebook page because you could win up to $2,000 in their current sweepstakes!

I’ll be checking back with you guys one more time to give you another update on my One Small Change progress. Hopefully by then I’ll be a walking machine!

  1. I am not a morning person, so exercise in the morning is out for me. But if I put it off until evening, then I tend to talk myself out of it. I need to figure out a happy medium…

  2. I always plan to start exercising more and eat healthier but I always get sidetracked by doughnuts and pretty much any kind of sugar. I believe it does start with small steps and a lot of encouragement. The motivation comes and goes but we just have to keep on trying. 🙂

  3. I want to try being more healthy. I have really thought about ordering DDP yoga. It is the wrestling geek in me, but it does seem to help people with back injuries.
