Review: Monopoly zAPPed Edition – Don’t Be a Hater

Normally, I'm not a big fan of when companies try to modernize certain games simply by tossing in some simple apps or electronics that really do nothing to enhance the gameplay. I even wrote an article recently about Classic Toys Ruined by Technology. So when I was asked to review Hasbro's new Monopoly zAPPed Edition, I was more than a little bit skeptical. My oldest son Jason is a Monopoly addict. We must have five or six different versions in our house (Regular, U-Build-It, Fantastic Four, Hershey's, Star Wars...). He just loves playing and it's actually his "Go To" game when Grandma and Grandpa come over to babysit. So how could ...

Of Kids and Potty Mouths

My kids couldn't be more different. At least when it comes to certain things. Jason is the quiet one who is a stickler for the rules. Ryan, on the other hand, tends to have a motor mouth, and while he doesn't go around breaking rules left and right, he's not quite the Hall Monitor that his big brother is. So last night, my wife gets it in her head that she should teach our kids a few curse words. Before you start gasping and reaching for pitchforks, she's not going around turning them into little George Carlins. She just wants them to be aware of them in case my kids overhear ...

I Survived Another Olympic Day With My Kids

As another school year comes to close, my kids participated in Olympic Day once again. Otherwise known as Field Day. Or as we parents call it, the Stand-Out-In-The-Crazy-Hot-Sun-For-Hours-On-End-To-See-Your-Kid-Run-For-Two-Minutes Day. The school breaks all the students up into three competing teams; red, white, and blue. This year, both my boys were on Team Red. Thankfully they try to match up siblings to keep us parents sane. The crummy part was that K-2 competes in the morning and 3-5 gets the afternoon shift, with about an hour and fifteen minute break in between. So yeah, my wife and I spent just about the entire day there. It's really a blast though, because the kids ...

Happy Father’s Day!

I've had a great Father's Day so far, snagging some awesome presents and tons of hugs. For my 40th birthday earlier this month, I got the Lego Batcave, which I literally finished putting together last night. Today I switched to the Marvel Universe and got a bunch of Avengers Legos. Yeah, I already had to put Captain America together. Looking forward to spending the whole day with the extended family. I can't believe I've been a dad for 9 years already. It still seems like yesterday when my wife and I came home from the hospital with this little munchkin, sat on the couch in our house, looked at each other ...

Happy 70th Birthday, Dad

Today is my dad's birthday. He's 70 years young. It's funny, when you're little, even hearing that someone is 30 or 40 years old sounds ancient. Fifty or 60 is crazy old, and anything beyond that is nursing home city. Now that I'm 40 myself, I don't feel that old. I still feel young inside. And no way do I picture my dad as 70 either. Luckily, he's still in great shape and doesn't look a day over 55, maybe 60. In honor of your birthday, dad, I've put together a list of the 10 biggest memories I have (so far) of you in my life. These aren't the most important ...
