Save the Scares for Halloween, Reading Should Be Shared

My parents used to live only 15 minutes from us. So every year at Halloween, after taking the kids trick or treating in the neighborhood, we’d all hop in the car and drive to grandma and grandpa’s house for an extra special Trick or Treat session. Now that they’ve moved upstate, it’s been a number of years since we got to spend Halloween with them.

Allie’s parents still live 15 minutes away, though, so we still hit up half the grandparents every year. Nothing like getting an extra special candy assortment, right?

Well, while we can’t Trick or Treat with my parents, there’s still a way for them to interact virtually with my kids. No, candy cannot be sent (a la Wonkavision) over the internet. Instead, thanks to Panasonic’s new HomeTeam app, Grandparents can virtually connect with their families to not just chat, but to spend time reading together!

With over 1500 books in its library, families can hook up with other relatives anywhere around the country. Grandparents. Aunts. Uncles. Cousins. Even parents away on business. It’s such a simple, yet fabulous idea to stay connected with your young kids.

I couldn’t resist pointing out that there are a number of Marvel superhero books on here to read. I enjoyed reading about Captain America’s origin… uh, to my kids, that is. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Besides being a video call, you get to read a book to your relative right there on the screen. It’s the next best thing to literally being there at bedtime to tuck your loved one in.

The interface is real simple so there are no real distractions. Just you and your loved one, along with a book onscreen to follow along as you (or they!) read.

You can also play a variety of games like checkers, chess or matching with each other too!

This kind of connectivity is fantastic and really takes advantage of technology to bring a personal and emotional connection to families that may be thousands of miles away from each other. Imagine having your 5-year-old playing a Curious George matching game with Grandpa even though he lives way down in Florida. That’s just so cool, isn’t it?

In honor of Halloween, HomeTeam is offering a real treat! They’re encouraging families to make room for a little “brain candy” (maybe not as tasty as a KitKat, but certainly more important) with its #MakeReadingLessScary campaign.

There’s loads of fun, spooky-filled Halloween type books for you to read to your kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, whoevers! You can find a big list of recommended Halloween books (like Toy Story: A Spooky Adventure) on the Make Reading Less Scary site!
Give a real treat to your kids (and your relatives!) by hooking them all up with HomeTeam! Sign up for a free 30-day trial today, with no credit card required! You can register at the MyHomeTeam site or download the app at the Google Play store or iTunes Store.

  1. That is just awesome! My children are blessed to have their Grandmother living with us but not all children are that lucky. This is a great tool – provided the grandparents can get it to work.
