It’s funny, I was never a big Scrabble player when I was younger. Even though I was an English Major in college, the game just didn’t do it for me. But in recent years, I’ve really gotten into it.

Allie and I play all the time and even my kids get into a bit now. Hasbro’s got a new twist on the classic Scrabble game, so I was real eager to check it out!

Power Tiles Scrabble giveaway

The game plays just like it always has, with a new colorful twist: Power Tiles! Each player picks a color and gets two star tiles and one blank tile in their color. Think of it as three bonuses.

The blank works just like the regular blanks except they’re worth 3 points apiece, or more if placed on a bonus square. When opponents use that blank, they get the 3 points as well!

The stars, on the other hand, give you two cool options. First, you can use a star to exchange your tiles. But unlike normal play where that costs you your turn, if you use a star, you can exchange tiles and then take a turn. Booyah! The other way to use a star is to tick off other players in the game. Basically, you can place them anywhere on the board as blocker.

I haven’t played yet, but I love this little twist. Anything that can annoy fellow Scrabble players on my turn gets a thumbs up from me!

Now, if you weren’t aware, a lot of schools have copies of Scrabble in the classroom. There’s even a National School Scrabble Program! Hasbro does a great job of working with schools and teachers across the country to get kids involved in this spelling-based game. In fact, there’s even an official School Scrabble Championship where teams of kids from Grades 4-8 can compete for up to $10,000 in prizes!

The Tournament is open to US & Canada residents and this year’s event is on April 26-27 in Providence, RI. Registration is now open too! If you’re a teacher or want to get your kids’ school involved, definitely check it out!

  1. We love playing the Monopoly Towers game. Seeing how happy it makes my daughter to play is why it’s our favorite.

  2. I would rather ply Scrabble than any other board game. I think also that its great for kids to teach them not only spelling but also new vocabulary words, definitions and meanings.

  3. Scrabble truly is one of my all time favorites – from early childhood and right into NOW.

However, I do have especially fond and warm memories of playing Monopoly with my Dad and older brother. They were both so competitive with each other they hardly noticed (or paid any attention to) me – so sometimes I could (staying under the radar) sneak in a win while they were preoccupied with each other!

Those are precious memories – but in a different kind of way. SCRABBLE is a real game that exersizes your mind and I think enhances creativity too! Thanks!

  18. It always will and always has been scrabble. I have such great memories of my family playing this together when we were kids. Mom and Dad loved it too, but only one could play at a time because they fought over every word the other one played and us kids used to get so antsy waiting for them to “challenge” and get it over with already. Needless to say, I learned a lot of great words from them…adz, adze, qi, xu…..
