When Scribblenauts first came out, I remember thinking, “This is not just cool, it’s actually kind of educational!” Mixing imagination and creativity in a video game where spelling counts is pure genius.
Scribblenauts Unlimited, the newest release in the line, continues the fun with young Maxwell trying to solve complex puzzles and challenges with the help of his magical notepad. Whatever you spell out, comes to life.
The new version takes a super fun leap by including adjectives in the mix, so now instead of just writing “chocolate cake” and seeing a cake appear, you can write “big chocolate cake” and get a huge dessert! Jason and I had a lot of fun with the adjectives, just fooling around to see what would happen. We made characters fatter, taller, shorter, etc.
There’s a full story in this latest release that gives you an overarching quest, while still solving loads of small puzzles along the way. You’ll finally learn the backstory of Maxwell’s family including his parents and twin sister Lily. Plus, you’ll even learn how he got the magical notepad in the first place!
Jason really enjoyed the original Scribblenauts on his Nintendo DS, and absolutely loved Scribblenauts Unlimited! I was sent a copy for the Nintendo 3DS to review and it couldn’t have been more perfectly timed, as Jason was home sick from school for a few days, so it gave him plenty of time to play.
I figured hearing it straight from a fourth grader’s mouth would be the best way to review this awesome game, so here’s Jason’s review:
And here’s a look at the game in action to see just how much fun it can be:
