Nintendo’s Original NES Returns!

I’m an old school gamer. If you know me, you know that the Atari 2600 is still my all-time favorite system. But over the years, I’ve had dozens of different consoles from the original NES to the Sony PlayStation to the Xbox One and loads in between. I’ve pretty much loved them all.

Now, besides the Atari 2600, my next favorite systems would have to be the original NES and the Sega Genesis. I played both of those to the Nth degree when I was a kid. Sega was great for sports games (Blades of Steel!), but the NES was, well, something special.

I remember my buddy Ethan getting one and buying the original Legend of Zelda game. We’d race to his house after school every day, run to his basement and put the gold-colored cartridge in to send Link off on yet another exciting adventure! Of course there was also Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros., Icarus, Castlevania, you name it. Super simple controls and a seriously fun all-around system.

NES Replica

Well, Nintendo just announced something that made me do my very own Mario dance! You can relive those classic games with a new Mini Collector’s Edition NES that will hit stores on November 11, with a suggested retail price of $59.99.

This mini replica of the original system doesn’t need cartridges. You just plug and play with your HDTV! Yep, there’s even an HDMI cable included. What’s more, it comes packed with 30 games built in from Super Mario Bros. to Kirby’s Adventure! Take a look at the full list:

  1. Balloon Fight™
  3. Castlevania™
  4. Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
  5. Donkey Kong™
  6. Donkey Kong Jr. ™
  8. Dr. Mario™
  9. Excitebike™
  11. Galaga™
  13. GRADIUS™
  14. Ice Climber™
  15. Kid Icarus™
  16. Kirby’s Adventure™
  17. Mario Bros. ™
  18. MEGA MAN® 2
  19. Metroid™
  21. PAC-MAN™
  22. Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream
  23. StarTropics™
  24. SUPER C™
  25. Super Mario Bros.™
  26. Super Mario Bros. ™ 2
  27. Super Mario Bros. ™ 3
  29. The Legend of Zelda™
  30. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™

That’s basically like paying $2 for each of the 30 games. Or the equivalent of eight quarters in an arcade machine. And let’s face it, we’d all plunk down a lot more than that for some of these.

NES Replica

Looking at that list, a few that I absolutely cannot wait to play again include: Metroid, Punch-Out!!, Kid Icarus and Tecmo Bowl! The mini replica includes one retro NES Classic Controller, but you can purchase a second one for just $9.99 if you want to play a number of the two-player versions of some of these games.

I imagine this one’s going to be pretty high on everyone’s Christmas list this year!

What game are you most excited to play again?
