Blog Spotlight: Erin from The Mom Buzz

I was first stung by Erin‘s blog The Mom Buzz when I happened to catch one of her tweets about a Zombie Run. That led me to her blog where I learned she was training for her first 5K, which would involve avoiding a pack of flesh-eating zombies. Not your typical post from a mommy blogger.  Toss in plenty of posts about fitness, a wacky fun attitude, adult braces, and some truly outrageous socks (yes, socks), and you can color me hooked.

Meet Erin from The Mom Buzz

Erin TaylorBlogger: Erin Taylor

How’d your blog get its name?

It is all about the bee. Back in my marketing days, I had to go through graphics to go with marketing materials. I saw the bee, which had no use to me back then, but I always remembered that I wanted to use it one day – somehow. When I started the blog, it was the perfect opportunity. I bought the graphics, thought of a name that would go with it, started buzzing and theMomBuzz was born!

What do you love most about blogging?

Honestly, I started blogging to make it affordable to become a SAHM. I left a career in marketing and communications and suddenly we were a one-income household. So I love that blogging allows me to be there for my boys.

What’s the worst part about blogging?

That what I wanted to be a part-time gig turned into a 24/7 monster to feed for a while! But I have a great schedule now, working on theMomBuzz around 20 hours a week.

Why do you blog?

I currently blog to help inspire other moms with fitness, as well as buzz the latest and greatest must-haves for moms. Maybe share information on products or tips they might not be aware of otherwise.

How does blogging fit in to your fitness routine? Do you connect with lots of other exercise bloggers?

I recently joined a Facebook group of other Tampa Bay bloggers – and most of them are FITNESS NUTS! I haven’t met any of them in person yet – moms are busy! But when I read their blogs they inspire me to go further. For example, I currently run 5ks, but now I want to train for a half marathon! And as for blogging, I now try to somehow fit some fitness tidbits or posts into theMomBuzz once a week. It might be about a workout, a change, progress, diet…. anything. I am a real mom and I am in the best shape of my life – it’s do-able!

What first attracted me to your blog was your post about the Zombie Run. What was that like?

There are a few zombie runs out there. The one I ran was RunForYourLives.com. It was a blast, I practically peed myself when I had to get by the first zombie horde. They were the hardest part – the obstacles were insanely simple, which I appreciated after huffing and puffing past the zombies that really chase you. If you don’t like running, do want to get in shape and do like zombies, I suggest making this your first 5k. And train with the zombie run app called … Zombies, Run!

Does your family read your blog? Ever get in trouble because of it?

My dad reads my blog. He is probably the proudest of me with it, which is funny. He never comments, but he shows it off to people. And since I know family and friends can read at any time, I don’t tend to write anything that will get me in trouble!

Your bearded hubby is often mentioned in your blog. What does he think of your posts and especially any with him in it?

I have a post called My Husband Mostly Naked. It still gets hits regularly. 🙂 He doesn’t mind posts with him in it, because they are always gushing about him.

How has blogging affected your life?

It has allowed me to be on television three times, provide my family with fun activities and events around Tampa Bay and helped meet our monthly budget! I can’t imagine what it would be like not to blog any more!

Have you met other bloggers in person? Is it awkward?

I’ve met a few. For example, Melinda and Rob from Look What Mom Found, as well as Lee from MySentimentExactLee. It feels like you already know them when you meet them, but I am always awkward.

If you could have anyone in the world (living or dead) write a guest post for your blog, who would it be?

Can it be fictional? Because then I would choose R from “Warm Bodies.” He has a lot to say for a Zombie.

You’ve had adult braces for over a year now and shown them off numerous times. Is the Mom Buzz good therapy, since they seem to bother you a bit?

They bother me A LOT! I guess since it bothers me, that is why I write about it. I complain, but I know the results are good for you in the end. I feel like the orthodontist mislead me on how horrible it will be, and I want to be honest. Braces for adults suck. But, having a “smile” you won’t show because you are embarrassed about it is worse. I look forward to smiling a lot in 2 more months. And smooching my hubby. So I think it will be worth it in the end, no matter how horrible it is for 12 – 15 months.

Running Socks

Okay, what’s the deal with the socks?

Ahhh! The socks! Everyone loves the socks. I get compliments all the time … honest ones, not “what the heck are you thinking!?” I already was known for some of the zanier outfits at the gym, with my hot pink and patterned shorts. The socks go well with them. I also believe they help me run faster. There is nothing special about them, but if you are going to wear the crazy knee-high socks, people are going to notice you. And if people notice you, you gotta give it your all when running outside or running on the treadmill. So it’s fun motivation. The socks come from Dicks Sporting Goods (Reebok), Spencers, Hot Topic, Sock Dreams and Sock It To Me.
