MarioSonicRio

This summer, the Olympics head to Rio! But you don’t need to buy a ticket to Brazil to get in on the games. At least not at the moment… That’s because our old friends Mario and Sonic are joining their friends for the latest and greatest Nintendo Olympic game!

Our fine friends over at Nintendo sent over two copies of the Nintendo 3DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for Jason and Ryan to take for a test drive. The game lets you train with Mario or Sonic in their own stories and then lets you test your Olympic skills in 14 different events.

Mario & Sonic Rio Games

Game highlights include:

  • Golf returns to the real Olympics for the first time in over 100 years, and you can have a ball joining in on the phone as Mario takes a big swing at Olympic gold!
  • Take your own Mii characters to Mario or Sonic’s gyms to train and then unravel two mysterious tales
  • Using Mario or Sonic amiibo figures can boost those characters’ outfits with a power for that day
  • Regular sporting events get a real fun Nintendo twist with Plus Events that feature themed obstacles familiar to fans of the Mario and Sonic Universes
  • Create your own competition with 4-player local and download play
  • The 3DS even features a few exclusive events, including: Rhythmic Gymnastics Hoop, Golf and 110m Hurdles

I asked Jason and Ryan to share their three favorite events so far on Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Here’s what they had to say:

Boxing

In boxing you must K.O. the opponent by throwing jabs and punches.  If you K.O. your opponent 3 times in a round or keep your opponent on the floor for 10 seconds you win.  If 2 rounds has gone by and no one has lost, the referee picks the winner.  This is the only way I have won so far.  This game requires skill and precision and that is why I like it.

BMX Plus

In this Plus game, you have to race along a track filled with hazards from the Mario and Sonic games.  Such as, Goomba towers, boost pads, and Eggman barriers.  At ramps, you press the B button to jump at the right time.  This game is like a simpler version of Mario Kart and is really fun.

BMX Plus

Archery Plus

In Archery Plus, there are multiple boos holding 1 of 3 types of targets: 1, 3 or 5 stars which decrease in size the more stars.  The boos move around in a circular pattern and you have to shoot as many as you can with one arrow.  There are 3 rounds and each one is progressively harder with more boos moving in harder patterns.  This game requires a lot of skill and patience which is good.

Football (Soccer)

The first event I like in Mario and Sonic in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is Football (soccer). I find this event very fun in many different ways. First it’s so fun because you’re playing soccer and it’s so close to what real soccer looks like so it feels like you’re actually playing soccer. You can dribble, pass and the goalie can even throw the ball in just like in real soccer. Overall it just gives off the experience that you’re actually playing real soccer. I really enjoyed this event.

Archery

The next event I enjoyed is Archery. I find this event fun because I like how the game makes events like this so realistic. This event also has great controls which give you the feel that you’re actually outside shooting arrows. I like how the target gets harder to hit each round. You have to aim the arrow with extreme precision and accuracy. You also have to pay attention to the force and direction of the wind which makes it harder and more fun. I also really enjoyed this event.

Boxing

The next and final event I enjoyed is Boxing. This event was the most fun out of these three events. This is the first time in a Mario and Sonic Olympic games that Boxing is an event and it is fun. You can move back and forth and have a variety of punches you can throw and block. It is so much fun blocking and then throwing a combo of punches at your opponent and you can even throw a special punch which usually knocks out your opponent. When you get knocked out, you can get back up like real boxing while the referee counts to 10. I extremely like this event.

This Mario and Sonic Olympic Games has the normal events but also extremely unique Plus events which are really fun. You can also battle friends in this game, like you could battle your friend in boxing or in running or in swimming. This game offers a wide variety of events for anyone at any age. I recommend you try this game.

  2. This looks like a great game to play. I have always loved playing the various Mario games (such as Mario Party, Mario Tennis, etc.). The soccer game might be the one I would really love playing.
