In this life, I’ve found that there are two types of mayonnaise people: Those who like it and those who hate it. That is, I thought there were only two types until I met my future (and now current) father-in-law.
Allie’s dad doesn’t just like mayonnaise, he loves it. But he doesn’t just love it, he downright worships it I’d say. Need an example? Last year when my in-laws took a trip to Spain, the one item he absolutely triple checked to make sure it was packed? Yeah, dozens of small Hellmann’s mayonaisse packets.
Oh yeah, did I mention that it has to be Hellmann’s? Most definitely. In his mind, there is no alternative. Dare to offer a different mayo and fear his wrath.
Now I’m a fan of mayo as much as the next guy. I also do prefer Hellmann’s to any other brand. In tuna fish, macaroni salad or on a turkey sandwich, it just transforms the average (or even inedible) into a tastetastic celebration.
We once bought my father in law a massive dictionary for his birthday. (He’s a big fan of words. No, really!) That was probably the greatest gift we could ever get him. The only thing I imagine that could come close would be to get him a tour of the Hellmann’s factory or possibly set up a keg of Hellmann’s in his fridge.
For now, he’ll have to settle for a $1 off Hellmann’s mayonnaise coupon, exclusive to Walgreens!
And it is true what they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Or in this case, the jar of mayo doesn’t fall far from the fridge. Allie is almost as mayo-obsessed as her dad. I haven’t caught her eating it by the spoonfuls out of the jar (well, not yet anyways), but she loves slopping it on whatever she’s cooking!

My husband insists on Hellman’s and he states that he can definately tell the difference between difference mayonaise.
I have never seen the Hellmanns with Olive Oil! Wow sandwichs’ here I come!!!
I personally do not care for mayo. I deal with it when it is in say a macaroni salad, or some deviled eggs. But I do not like the flavor when it is just slathered on a sandwich or sub. And by the spoonful….not happening. Ever! The majority of my family likes Hellmann’s. But my fiancée is a Miracle Whip lover. So that is all that enters our house. So when we do use mayo, it is Miracle Whip. And even though I don’t care for either alone, I can taste the difference between the two.
