I’m Not a Handyman, I Just Break Things

Bob the Builder's got nothing on me. Neither does his Spanish-speaking cousin Handy Manny. Tim the Toolman Taylor? Even his ridiculous, accident-causing projects squash my abilities. In other words, I suck at fixing things. Actually, that's not true. I'm pretty decent with electronics. Got a DVD player that needs hooking up? Even printers and wireless networks I can handle with minimal cursing. But ask me to do even basic home repairs and you're better off giving a hammer to my 7 year old. I can hang pictures up on the wall, though that's a chore. Spackling is something I can semi do, but if you want it looking really nice, hire a ...

Happy Father’s Day!

I've had a great Father's Day so far, snagging some awesome presents and tons of hugs. For my 40th birthday earlier this month, I got the Lego Batcave, which I literally finished putting together last night. Today I switched to the Marvel Universe and got a bunch of Avengers Legos. Yeah, I already had to put Captain America together. Looking forward to spending the whole day with the extended family. I can't believe I've been a dad for 9 years already. It still seems like yesterday when my wife and I came home from the hospital with this little munchkin, sat on the couch in our house, looked at each other ...

Happy 70th Birthday, Dad

Today is my dad's birthday. He's 70 years young. It's funny, when you're little, even hearing that someone is 30 or 40 years old sounds ancient. Fifty or 60 is crazy old, and anything beyond that is nursing home city. Now that I'm 40 myself, I don't feel that old. I still feel young inside. And no way do I picture my dad as 70 either. Luckily, he's still in great shape and doesn't look a day over 55, maybe 60. In honor of your birthday, dad, I've put together a list of the 10 biggest memories I have (so far) of you in my life. These aren't the most important ...

Of Superheroes, Sushi and Poop – My 40th Birthday Rocked the House!

I may've turned 40 on Saturday, but I feel like I'm 12 again. This weekend, my wife and kids pulled out all the stops. And I do mean all. The day started bright and early at 7:02 when my alarm clock (a.k.a. Ryan, my super-excited 6-year-old) jumped into bed screaming it's my birthday. He then proceeded to watch an episode or two of T.U.F.F. Puppy on TV while I dozed in and out of dreamland. Fast forward an hour later when my groggy head finally woke up a bit. And so did my older son Jason. We all headed downstairs for breakfast and that's when I saw this mountain of gifts ...

Goodbye 30s… Hello End of the Line

Next week I turn 40. That means this is the last weekend for me to enjoy in my 30s. Then it's apparently all over. I officially step onto... The Hill. To be honest, after having kids, my own birthday isn't that big a deal anymore. I know the kids love celebrating, so I join in on that fun. But it's not like I'm thinking about a day focused solely on me. Though I am looking forward to the cake and my wife's birthday present. (The two of us are going to the city for an awesome sushi dinner and then off to see Spider-Man on Broadway!) Funny to think that it's been ...
