You need to see Guardians of the Galaxy. Need to see what of the what, now?

Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s an all-new Marvel movie coming out this summer and it’s most definitely going to be loads different than what you’ve come to expect so far from Marvel.

Up till now, not much has been leaked on Marvel’s film starring this, uh, quite bizarre space team. I teased it back in my Disney 2014 Movie Rundown post, but the official first movie trailer has been released and it’s a doozy! Take a look:

There’ve been a number of different incarnations of the Guardians in the comics and I’m actually not all that familiar with this team’s adventures. Maybe that’s why I’m so fascinated by it and really can’t wait to see it.

Of course it could also be because Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t seem like your typical superhero film. Not at all.

Or it could just be that it stars an anthropomorphic raccoon with a really big gun. Yeah, that certainly doesn’t hurt.

So who are the Guardians of the Galaxy? I’ll let the movie’s PR department fill you in…

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector.

I think it’s safe to say Rocket Racoon is quickly going to cement his place in pop-culture lore. I’m crazy pumped to see him in action, as well as see how the Collector ties into everything. Those of you who were smart enough to sit through the credits of Thor: The Dark World will remember this eccentric space guy with a rather interesting collection.

Let’s just say I have a feeling the Guardians, the Collector and the Avengers will somehow be mixing it all up with a big baddie named Thanos at some point in the future.

Now, as much as I love Captain America and The Avengers films (and by “love,” I really mean “insanely obsessed”), I love how Marvel’s expanding its horizons with other characters and genres too. And the coolest thing is that they’re keeping it all tied together in one universe. That’s what makes Marvel Comics so incredible. It’s what made the Avengers films so great. And it’s just one part of what’s sure to be a fun ride with Guardians of the Galaxy.

  1. awesome trailer this moved up the list to the 2nd movie I most want to see this summer right behind cap. I am a little disappointed that rocket and groot dont talk but I guess they want to save that for trailer 2 or maybe the movie

  2. I do feel like Marvel limits itself by stuffing EVERYTHING into its consistent universe, since they have to reset it and deal with ‘current’ conflicts in every running strip. Guardians looks so much fun because it’s not all tangled together, even though it’s technically in the Marvel universe.

That raccoon is going to be great.

    • Well to be fair, DC does the same exact thing. But the nice thing about the movies, is they don’t last 30 years and need a reboot. I LOVE how all the characters are mentioned or appear in other Marvel movies and think that’s just something extra special that you don’t usually get from Hollywood.

  3. Ummmm….YES! Marvel is kicking ass and taking names. When they announced they were going to do this people Googled Guardians of the Galaxy and thought, “Uh..yea…okay Marvel. Pull that one off.” And with the release of this trailer Marvel has completely punched the naysayers in the face. This movie will be awesome. I AM GROOT!
