You Can’t Have a Winter Soldier Party Without an Edible Chess Birthday Cake

Jason turns 11 (eep!) next month but thanks to crazy conflicts, we had his birthday party last weekend. This year, we took him and his friends to the movies, followed by a sleepover. Or, as you'd expect, a non-sleepover. Clearly Marvel is a big fan of my son, since every year around his birthday, there's always a huge release. Last year was Iron Man 3 and this year it's Captain America: The Winter Soldier! We started with dinner at the food court. We brought in pizza from Suffern's Fieldhouse (soooo good) and of course, Allie made sure to bring the proper paper goods. And since I managed to cut off Ryan's head in the ...

Win a $25 Birthday in a Box Gift Card (Ends 2/4)

I've always wanted to open up a theme restaurant called On a Stick. See, everything you order comes on a stick. Hot dogs. Marshmallows. Chicken fingers. The bread. Heck, even the water would somehow come in a glass on a stick. (I'd come up with some ingenious way of putting holes in the table to hold all these sticks.) Breakfast would be a bit tough, but I'm still working out the details. Anyways, I'm a fan of themes and of convenience. I mean, come on, is anything easier to eat than if it's on a stick? No utensils necessary! No messy fingers too! So what's my point here? No, I'm not looking ...

Celebrating Mom’s Big Birthday with One Goofy Cake

This weekend we went upstate to visit my parents and celebrate my mom's birthday. This Tuesday, she turns the big 7-0, though she certainly doesn't look it. Come to think of it, she certainly doesn't act it either. How many of you have a senior citizen mother who watches Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Doctor Who and even the Lord of the Rings movies? She's always loved dogs (especially Shih-Tzus), British mysteries, and tea. And the one other big constant in her life since I've known her (which I guess would pretty much be my entire life) is that she loves Disney. In particular, she is an enormous fan of Goofy. Take a visit ...

How to Make Krabby Patty Cupcakes That’d Make Even SpongeBob SquarePants Jealous!

SPECIAL 'MOMMY'S BUSY GO ASK DADDY' GUEST STAR EDITION! It's said that behind every good man, there's a good woman. Well, I'll go one step further and say behind every great blog is a greater woman. In the case of Mommy's Busy Go Ask Daddy, that'd be my beautiful wife Allison. Besides putting up with my earthquake-like snoring and insane comic book geekiness, Allie's a Master Baker. Forget that Play-Doh like Fondant garbage. (Have you ever actually tasted that stuff? Blech!) Give her a Duncan Hines Cake Mix and a closet full of Pillsbury frosting, and she becomes a Pastry Picasso! She made these insanely delicious and adorable cupcakes for Ryan's birthday ...

Happy 69th Birthday, Mom!

Today is a really special day celebrating a special birth. Yep, I'm talking about my mom. Who else did you think I was referring to? My folks live upstate in the Albany area, so we spent the weekend there to celebrate a late Hanukkah mixed with mom's birthday. My sister lives up there with her family, so they hung out with us all weekend too. It was a great weekend filled with a variety of insanity. The adventure started literally the second we walked into the door. Ryan wasn't feeling well from the car ride and went right to the couch to sit down where he was with my dad. Allie and ...

Happy Birthday, Iron Man

May 10, 2013 is a pretty special day. My little guy turns 10. That's double digits. We're talking heavy stuff here for parents! Besides being Jason's birthday, it's also the day Marvel's Iron Man 3 comes out! And if you haven't heard anything about it yet, cast your peepers on this just-released trailer. That's the first time I've seen any of it. I totally love where the story's going in this one. Tony's feeling bad, can't sleep. The affects of the attack on New York from The Avengers is really taking a toll on him. How can you not love that super rich continuity Marvel's built up and continued to build on ...
